Washing away sinus problems

Using neti pot can help keep passages clean, infection free

For 10 years, Nancy Siewart kept a neti pot neatly tucked inside her cupboard.

Though she often talked about its usefulness for cleansing the sinuses, the yoga instructor had never tried one to see if it really worked.

But after watching her husband rid himself of an aggravating sinus infection by tilting the slender, miniature teakettle into his nostrils, Siewart, 66, of Wauwatosa, decided it was time to try it for herself.

Twenty-five years later, she's still touting the neti pot - and she's also using it daily to refresh her nasal passages.

"I'm not a sufferer, but I can tell instantly that I've gotten rid of all the guck in there," she said. "It sounds too simple to be true...but it works."

Flushing the nasal passages with a salt solution, or nasal irrigation, is a yoga tradition that dates back thousands of years.

But though it is already recommended by physicians for cleansing after sinus surgery, the practice is just catching on as an alternative treatment for nasal stuffiness caused by colds, sinusitis and allergies.

A study published last year in the Annals of Family Medicine found that nasal irrigation is safe, well-tolerated, inexpensive and effective.

The study, done by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, also found that patients were able to do it at home with minimal training.

"It really makes you feel a lot better right away," said Diane Heatley, founder of Med-Systems Inc., a Madison-based company that manufacturers and markets the SinuCleanse nasal wash system.

"It's not part of our cultural norm to put saltwater in your nose, whereas in other parts of the world it's as natural as brushing your teeth," said Heatley, also an associate professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison.

The technique, though scary to a lot of people, is simple:

• Lean over the sink with your head looking into the drain.

• Place the spout of the neti pot into one nostril and tilt your head so the solution begins to run through your nostrils.

• Keep your mouth open and breathe normally so the solution doesn't drain into your mouth.

So how do you know if you're washing properly?

"If it goes in one side and comes out the other, you know you're doing it right," Heatley said.

37 million sufferers

The sinuses are the air chambers behind your cheeks, eyebrows and jaw.

Each one makes mucus, which is the fluid that cleans bacteria and other particles out of the air you breathe.

Normally, mucus collecting in the sinuses drains into the nasal passages.

If the nose becomes blocked from a cold, the sinuses become inflamed and don't function properly.

Inflammation of the sinuses, or sinusitis, affects about 37 million Americans each year and is characterized by nasal congestion, thick yellow-green nasal discharge, facial pain and pressure.

"Sinusitis is an ill-defined disease that we don't fully understand," said Todd Loehrl, chief of rhinology and sinus surgery at Froedtert Hospital. "It tends to be overdiagnosed and because it's overdiagnosed, it tends to be overtreated."

Reduces swelling

Though typical treatment includes antibiotics and decongestants, Loehrl said antibiotics are overprescribed because most of the cases are probably viral.

For that reason, nasal irrigation is a favorable treatment because of its ability to reduce swelling in the nose and move particles through the nasal passages, he said.

Earlier this month, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that using antibiotics such as amoxicillin to treat sinus infections likely increased the bacteria's resistance to the drugs.

The researchers found that the number of patients whose symptoms got better within 10 days was about the same whether or not they took an antibiotic.

"I think patient education is important so that they know what to expect and what is likely to work and what isn't, plus especially explaining the pros and cons of antibiotics for them and society - antibiotic resistance," said Ian Williamson, author of the study and a family medicine researcher at the University of Southampton in England.

"We have all probably been over-relying on antibiotics for acute sinusitis, when there are in fact probably more harms than goods associated with their use," he said.

Relieves migraines

Genevieve Vermeulen has used nasal washing to help relieve her migraine headaches her entire adult life.

Her husband uses it to clear up his sinuses, and her 6-year-old son uses it for allergy relief and nasal blockage.

"When you're desperate for relief, you'll try anything," said the 35-year-old Wauwatosa woman who had tried over-the-counter medicines and homeopathy.

Vermeulen says she gets relief within 20 minutes of nasal washing and that her biggest concern is remembering to keep her mouth open so that the solution doesn't drain down her throat.

"It feels strange to have all that water going through your nose," she said. "It doesn't always feel good, but it works."

A study last month in the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery found that nasal irrigation provided more short-term relief than saline spray in patients with chronic nasal and sinus infections.

The findings were based on results from more than 100 patients who were randomly assigned to either spray their noses with saline solution for eight weeks or do nasal irrigation for the same period.

All the patients had symptoms for at least one month, with the majority reporting six months, before enrollment, said Melissa Pynnonen, author of the study and a clinical assistant professor in the department of otolaryngology at the University of Michigan Health System.

"This is something that everybody can do," she said.

'Trust me, it'll work'

"When patients come in, they have high expectations, usually for antibiotics," she said. "We need to do a better job of educating patients. As physicians, we have a hard time convincing people to do something like flush their noses because it's simple. But we need to encourage them to do this."

Experts recommend washing nasal passages with either a premixed solution or talking to your doctor about how to mix your own.

For the best results, it should be used twice daily and before any symptoms appear.

"You'll sleep better, think better and breathe better," Siewart said.

"I know everyone is saying it can't be this easy," she said. "But trust me, it'll work."

Diver stumbles upon Captain Kidd's ship

Divers believe they have discovered the 300-year-old remains of a ship once captained by the notorious British pirate Captain Kidd.

Complete with cannons and anchors, the wreckage of the 400-ton Quedagh Merchant has lain untouched and undiscovered off the coast of Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic.

For centuries treasure hunters have sought the ship, but it has now been stumbled across by a local scuba diver.

The wreckage, found in shallow waters only 10ft from the surface and only 70ft from the coastline, is likely to provide vital clues and information about the notorious Kidd, who was hanged in London for piracy in 1701.

Researchers from Indiana University have been sent down to protect the remains from scavengers and turn the area into an underwater preserve.

Charles Beeker, a scuba-diving archaeologist who teaches at Indiana University, said: "When I first looked down and saw it, I couldn't believe everybody missed it for 300 years. I've been on thousands of wrecks and this is one of the first where it's been untouched by looters.

"We've got a shipwreck in crystal clear, pristine water that's amazingly untouched. We want to keep it that way."

Mr Beeker, who has previously helped the Dominican government open underwater parks that feature cannons, jar fragments and other items recovered from early 18th-century shipwrecks, added: "We believe this is a living museum. The treasure in this case is the wreck itself."

Kidd's capture of the Armenian Quedagh Merchant on Jan 30, 1698, in the Indian Ocean was considered his greatest prize and cemented his reputation for piracy.

The ship, which was under French protection, was loaded with gold, silver, satin and other valuable cloth from East India. Kidd briefly contemplated handing it back when he discovered the captain was English, but fearing a mutiny by his own crew he renamed it the Adventure Prize and set sail for Madagascar.

However, word had reached Britain of his actions and various naval commanders were ordered to "pursue and seize the said Kidd and his accomplices" for the "notorious piracies" they had committed.

As the net closed in around him, Kidd left the ship in the Caribbean in 1699 on his way to New York to try and clear his name.

The valuable contents were looted soon after the ship was sunk but it has otherwise remained remarkably intact.

Dominican ministers want to make the remains accessible to divers and snorklers.

John Foster, California's state underwater archaeologist who is helping the research, said: "I look forward to a meticulous study of the ship, its age, its armament, its construction.

"Because there is extensive written documentation, this is an opportunity we rarely have to test historic information against the archaeological record."

Geoffrey Conrad, an anthropologist involved in the case, said the location of the wreckage and the formation and size of the cannons, which had been used as ballast, are consistent with historical records of the ship.

"All the evidence that we find underwater is consistent with what we know from historical documentation, which is extensive. Through rigorous archaeological investigations, we will conclusively prove that this is Captain Kidd's shipwreck."

Led Zep fans call for world tour

Led Zeppelin fans are clamouring for the band to announce a world tour following Monday night's triumphant comeback gig.

Guitarist Jimmy Page has already indicated that he would like to play more shows, but singer Robert Plant has so far appeared reluctant to commit.

On the band's official website, fans urged Plant to rethink. "If the crowd response didn't convince Robert then nothing will," one wrote of the show at the O2 Centre in London.

"Led Zep owe us a tour. Robert needs to start thinking about all the fans who love them," said another, while a third wrote: "I hope they will. There are so many of us who missed out on tickets for a concert we'd imagined for nearly three decades."

But others said fans should be content with the one-off show. "You should be grateful that Zeppelin have given the fans so much already, and that they are able and willing to do one more show at their age," one said.

The band are now taking stock and deciding whether to announce a full-blown tour.

"Nothing is set at the moment because their energies were concentrated 100%t on the gig. But a tour has certainly not been ruled out and Jimmy has said it would be a shame not to do more," an insider said.

Twenty million people crashed the website when details of the gig were announced. A lucky 10,000 got tickets for the show, the band's first full set in 27 years.

The three surviving members - Page, Plant and John Paul Jones - were joined by late drummer John Bonham's son, Jason.

The charity event was held in memory of former Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun, who signed Led Zeppelin.

Tiger’s wife Elin Nordegren Woods wins lawsuit and apology

DUBLIN, Ireland - The wife of golfer Tiger Woods won $183,250 and an apology Friday from an Irish magazine that published an abusive article and a faked nude photo of her.

Trevor White, publisher of The Dubliner, conceded that the article — published in September 2006 when Ireland was hosting the Ryder Cup — "was cheap, tasteless, and deliberately offensive. It was also completely untrue."

The article visibly angered Woods during the opening day of competition, which the United States lost to Europe. His wife, Elin Nordegren Woods, welcomed the settlement in a statement today.

"The false and deeply offensive article in The Dubliner magazine, with the accompanying photograph of another woman wrongly claimed to be me, caused great personal distress to me and my family," she said.

Nordegren Woods said she would donate the money to a cancer charity in honor of Heather Clarke, the wife of Northern Ireland golfer Darren Clarke. She died of cancer before the Ryder Cup tournament.

As part of the settlement accepted by a Dublin court, The Dubliner must publish its lengthy apology in a variety of venues, including in its next issue. If the magazine fails to meet the conditions the award will be increased to $366,500 and the publishers will have to pay Nordegren Woods’ legal costs.

"This regrettable episode in our lives in no way detracts from the great love of Ireland that Tiger and I share," Nordegren Woods said. "We look forward to experiencing the extraordinary warmth of its people and of our many friends in Ireland again in the future."

The September 2006 article’s headline described the U.S. golfers’ wives as "Ryder Cup filth." The story claimed that Woods’ wife "can be found in a variety of sweaty poses on porn sites across the Web." It also insulted the wives of golfers Chad Campbell, David Toms and Jim Furyk, who did not sue.

"The photograph was not of Ms. Nordegren Woods. There are no such photographs of Ms. Nordegren Woods on internet sites or elsewhere. Ms. Nordegren Woods has never posed, or been photographed, nude. The story was utterly and comprehensively false," White said.

Bush Announces Mortgage Rate Freeze Plan

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of strapped homeowners could get some relief from a plan negotiated by the Bush administration to freeze interest rates on subprime mortgages that are scheduled to rise in the coming months.

"There is no perfect solution," President Bush said Thursday as he announced an agreement hammered out with the mortgage industry. "The homeowners deserve our help. The steps I've outlined today are a sensible response to a serious challenge."

Bush has been accused of moving too slowly to address a crisis that has spread to the broader financial market. But he also was careful not to sound as if he were imposing a government solution and violating his free-market principles. He billed his plan as a voluntary, private-sector arrangement that involves no government money.

"We should not bail out lenders, real estate speculators or those made the reckless decision to buy a home they knew they could never afford," Bush said after meeting with industry leaders at the White House. "But there are some responsible homeowners who could avoid foreclosure with some assistance."

Bush said 1.2 million people could be eligible for help. But only a fraction will be subject to the rate freeze. Others would get assistance in refinancing with their lenders and moving into loans secured by the Federal Housing Administration, Bush said.

Also, the aid will only come to those who ask for it, he said. Thousands of borrowers who are falling behind on their payments have been sent letters about the options, and Bush also urged people to call a new hot line: 1-888-995-HOPE.

The announcement followed the news earlier Thursday that home foreclosures surged to an all-time high in the July-September period. The Mortgage Bankers Association reported that the percentage of all mortgages that started the foreclosure process in the third quarter jumped to a record 0.78 percent, surpassing the previous record of 0.65 percent of all mortgages in the second quarter.

The administration's effort is aimed at stemming a further tidal wave of foreclosures in coming years as 2 million subprime mortgages - loans provided to borrowers with spotty credit histories - reset from their introductory rates of around 7 percent to 8 percent to levels as high as 11 percent, adding hundreds of dollars to the typical monthly payment.

A recent surge in mortgage defaults, part of the worst housing slump in more than two decades, has piled up billions of dollars in losses for big banks, hedge funds and other investors while roiling financial markets worldwide. Some economists think the housing bust may become severe enough to push the country into recession.

Bush originally gave the wrong number for the hot line; the White House later corrected him.

The president mentioned other steps to prevent foreclosures. The FHA has greater flexibility to offer refinancing to homeowners with good credit histories. It is expected that this eventually will help 300,000 families, officials said.

The Federal Reserve is announcing stronger lending standards this month, while the Housing and Urban Development Department and federal banking regulators are acting to improve disclosure requirements, he said.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the streamlined procedures for supporting efforts to refinance mortgages and freeze rates were a ``welcome step in helping Americans protect their homes and communities from the consequences of unnecessary foreclosures."

The highest-profile part of the plan would freeze introductory "teaser" rates on certain subprime mortgages, preventing rates from rising for five years.

This offer would apply only to people living in their homes and who have not missed any payments at the lower rate. It also only would apply to loans taken out between 2005 and this past July 30 and scheduled to rise to higher rates in 2008 and 2009.

The hope is that the five-year freeze will buy time for the housing sales and prices to start rising again. Such a rebound would enable homeowners to refinance their current adjustable rate mortgages into fixed-rate loans with more affordable monthly payments.

But even Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who led the negotiations with the mortgage industry, acknowledged the effort is "not a silver bullet."

"We face a difficult problem," he said.

The big sticking point in the negotiations was getting investors who had purchased the mortgages after they were bundled into securities to agree to accept lower interest payments. Critics have said even with a deal, there are likely to be lawsuits. But officials representing major players in the mortgage industry said they believed the plan would withstand any legal challenges and would help at-risk homeowners avoid defaulting on their mortgages.

But George Miller, executive director of the American Securitization Forum, which represents companies that package mortgages into mortgage-backed securities, told reporters he expected the industry would face suits from investors unhappy that the original terms of the mortgages have been modified.

The president also did not miss the chance to lash out at the Democratic-controlled Congress.

Bush blamed lawmakers for not sending him legislation that he said would show they "are serious about responding to the challenges in the housing market." One measure would give the FHA more flexibility; a second would change the tax laws temporarily to help people who have a portion of their mortgage forgiven by banks.

"The Congress has not sent me a single bill to help homeowners," Bush said.

Women on the surge: How Ellen Page and Diablo Cody made the smartest comedy of the season

"I might be the only accidental screenwriter in Hollywood."

Diablo Cody's assessment of her career path sounds conveniently pithy, but it rings true. The former proofreader from Chicago moved to Minneapolis, became a full-time stripper and wrote a book (Candy Girl) and a blog (diablocody.blogsplot.com) about the experience. Her writing attracted the notice of Hollywood producer Mason Novick, who suggested she try her hand at a screenplay.

The result is Juno, a sparkling comedy about a high-school student (Halifax's Ellen Page) who finds herself with child and, after an aborted attempt at abortion, decides to give the baby up for adoption to a pair of yuppies played by Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. The director is Jason Reitman (2005's Thank You for Smoking).

The writer and the star are small but intimidatingly sharp. Page followed up her role as a disarmingly self-assured 14-year-old in 2005's Hard Candy with a part in X-Men 3 and three Toronto filmfest premieres this year: The Tracey Fragments, The Stone Angel and Juno. Cody (birth name: Brook Busey) is, at 29, the second-youngest person on Entertainment Weekly's just-published list of the 50 smartest people in Hollywood. (The youngest is Canada's Sarah Polley.) Meeting them in a Toronto hotel combines the most nerve-wracking elements of a date and a job interview.

Page, peering out from beneath a tattered woolen cap, turned 20 this year but could easily pass for the 16-year-old she plays in Juno. She looks bored, but comes alive whenever a question comes her way. Asked to name her favourite films, she rattles off Hairspray, Once and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, as well as Terrence Malick's Badlands, Truffaut's The 400 Blows and City of God, before worrying aloud that she sounds too mainstream.

Page says that when she first read Cody's script, "I was absolutely blown away; best thing I ever read. I became obsessive about playing this character. When a role really speaks to me and makes my heart jump I want to play them."

Cody's idea for the script started with a single image and flowed from there. "I was intrigued by the idea of this teenaged girl who was pregnant, and of the parents auditioning." She's quick to share the spotlight for the film's raucous reception from film festival audiences. "I could not have written it as successfully as Jason Bateman delivered it," she says of the awkward dialogue between the pregnant teen and the childless couple in the film.

And putting Bateman in the role? "I would credit that to the genius of Jason Reitman. I trusted him [with casting]. I didn't want to assume that responsibility at all."

The words are hers, however, and they crackle. At a recent preview screening in Toronto, audience members were laughing so hard at times that followup lines couldn't be heard. "One of the biggest challenges for a novice writer is to keep the voices distinct," Cody says. She used the trick of reading through the script with the names blocked out and asking, "Is there anybody else in this film who could be saying this? And the answer should be no."

Reitman's commitment was as fast and forceful as Page's. "He read the script early on and wanted to do it right away," Cody says. Seemingly diametric opposites - Cody, the ex-stripper from Minneapolis, is the ultimate outsider; Reitman is the son of director Ivan, who has stars on Canada's and Hollywood's Walks of Fame - the two nevertheless meshed quite well on Juno.

"Not only was I permitted to be on set but I was welcome," Cody says. "It was educational and very emotionally fulfilling. A movie is collaborative by nature." Although she had never written the screenplay for a film, "if you watch enough of them you get the innate rhythms." Anyone can recognize a three-act structure that goes off the rails, she maintains, even if they don't know the jargon. Her own favourite films are horrors (Rosemary's Baby among others) as well as The Graduate, which she calls "an inspiration to everyone who makes small, dark comedies."

Cody has since written the pilot for Steven Spielberg's The United States of Tara, also directed by Reitman and airing on Showtime next year, and Warner Bros. is said to have an interest in whatever screenplay she concocts next. "It's probably the best place to be an ex-stripper," she says of Los Angeles, where she now lives. "There are some people who find it novel and delightful."

Page likes being able to play a teenage smartass - "There's an arrogance to being 16," she says of her role - but the woman whose nickname is "The tiny Canadian" clearly has issues with her youthful looks. "It's annoying in my everyday life," she says, "where I feel I suffer from ageism."

"Don't worry," Cody coos. "I'll write you a part as a 45-year-old chainsmoker."
